Guidelines for Moisture Protection of Steel Bars During Sea Transport
Ocean shipping is harsh on steel. High humidity, salt-laden air, and temperature swings create perfect conditions for condensation, and once moisture settles on steel bars, corrosion starts immediately. For buyers waiting on a container, the damage often arrives before the cargo does.The solution isn't complicated, but it is specific. Start before loading. Bars should be clean, dry, and free of any surface contamination that could trap moisture. Loose rust or processing residue acts like a sponge, holding water against the metal for weeks at sea.
Packaging matters more than most people think. Vapor-phase corrosion inhibitor paper or film should wrap each bundle tightly, with the seams sealed. Desiccants placed inside the wrapping absorb residual humidity and condensation from temperature swings. Standard plastic sheeting alone isn't enough—it can actually trap moisture inside if not properly vented.
Inside the container, placement counts. Bundles should sit on dry wooden dunnage, not directly on the container floor, allowing air to circulate underneath. Leave clearance from container walls where condensation runs down. If possible, arrange bars to avoid water pooling on horizontal surfaces.
Finally, document everything. Photograph the loading condition, record desiccant placement, and note the container's interior condition. If a claim needs to be filed later, that documentation is your only leverage.
Rust never sleeps, especially at sea. But with proper prep, steel bars can arrive exactly as they left—clean, dry, and ready for use.
