Round Bar for Shafts: Choosing Between 1045, 4140 and 4340
Ask for steel for a shaft and you will almost always end up with one of three grades: 1045, 4140 or 4340. They look similar as bright round bar, but they sit at very different points on the cost and capability curve.1045 medium-carbon steel is the workhorse for general-purpose shafts. It turns easily, responds to induction hardening at the bearing journals, and keeps cost down on parts that carry moderate torque without shock loads. Line shafts, rollers, sprocket shafts and conveyor components are typical homes for it.
4140 (42CrMo4 / SCM440) is the default when the shaft carries real torque or impact. The chromium-molybdenum chemistry through-hardens far deeper than 1045, so a 4140 shaft keeps its strength into the core after quench and temper, and its fatigue resistance under reversed bending is in another league. Gearbox shafts, pump shafts and drive components for heavy machinery are the classic applications.
4340 is the step up when both strength and toughness have to survive together, especially in large sections or cold service. The nickel in the chemistry gives the core real toughness, which is why landing gear and heavy-duty crank work use it. It costs more, and it needs a proper heat treatment schedule, so it earns its premium only where 4140 would be marginal.
A practical selection rule: match the grade to the stress concentration first, not the strength table. Keyways, shoulders and press-fitted bearing seats are where shafts start their fatigue cracks, and a tougher grade with generous fillet radii outlives a stronger grade machined carelessly.
We supply 1045, 4140 and 4340 round bar in forged and hot-rolled condition, cut to length and supplied with heat treatment and mill certificates.
